Day 17 - Bali : It's a tough life...

Good morning world. I started my morning blogging once again (still catching up). Grabbed some brunch (nasi goreng and fruit salad) before we headed to the Bali Mandala Resort. We are going to chill out in the sun before heading to school to teach.

On our way to the resort, we bumped into Potok, Moonchen and a vet. Moonchen is getting desexed, the three of us were all in shocked about how they were going to do the procedure then and there - out in the open. We watched the vet inject Moonchen. Moonchen walked around slowly feeling drugged up and uneasy. We didn't stay to watch the procedure, we just couldn't bare being there. So we continued our daily jungle walk to the resort.

Today, I will not be joining the girls in the pool as I want to concentrate on my blogging. So I sat by the water with the amazing ocean view and started blogging away. I had been without internet for the past few days (I'd been struggling without), but today I'm using the Wi-Fi at the resort ($2 for 2 hours). I have two hours worth of usage - so I better make progress and update my blog as much as possible. Let the fingers do the talking.

Even though during my time in Bali is all about volunteer teaching, it is still a semi holiday for me as I only work 2 hours a day. I sit here in front of the ocean view pinching and thinking to myself "Am I really going to be away from home for 5 months?" I am still in disbelief that I am travelling solo, so far - I'm having an amazing time and I have met some wonderful people along the way. These new friends will remain close to heart forever. This experience will surely build my independence, improve personal development skills and to challenge my ability to adapt to difficult cultures and living lifestyles. To date, I can say I'm doing really well. As I am working on my blog, I am also working on my snow white skin tone. Wish me luck. My aim is to go back home at least 5 shades darker :).

When we arrived at school, Komung Eddie informed us that we will be teaching the kids how to match up the names and pictures of objects. Here we are, sitting at the steps in front of the classroom applying our drawing skills and preparing flashcards for today's lesson. There was a little debate about 'aeroplane' and 'airplane' because, the others knows it as 'airplane' but I know it as aeroplane - in the end we left it as the way I spelt it. Every day, we are getting new students signing up. Today, we had more than 10 new students - the classes are getting bigger and bigger each week (as I'm told).

Today, I did things a little different with regards to introducing myself to the class. I wrote some simple things about myself on the board. This will test today's class ability to read in English and will give a rough idea where their English level is at. To my surprise, they read it really well. I was really impressed. Full of childish curiosity, the class started asking more personal questions. We started the class showing them all the pictures and telling them what each one was, asking them to repeat after us. Next step, the class had to tell us as we showed the flash cards of the pictures what each object was. They had troubles pronouncing a few words, which we corrected. Julia wasn't feeling well today, so today its Christina and I leading the class. This was by far the craziest class I've had. The kids were so full of energy and really got into the activity. We started playing a game, they had to come out in front and pick out the right picture flashcard from the pile as we started calling out each object. They were really fast learners and got them all right. What I found really cute was when we had to choose a kid while they had their hands up, they would say "give me, give me", instead of
pick me, pick me". This I found very adorable. The class got overly excited as we continued to play the game to the point that Christina was being chased around the classroom, my feet were getting stomped on and my personal space invaded. I am happy that the kids had a great time and learnt something new in a fun and exciting way. The second class wasn't as crazy but I also had a great time teaching them how to say "aeroplane".

Today, was in fact a very exhausting day in class. We went back home and told Julia all about it. She is now feeling a little better, all she needed was a bit of rest. We chilled out for a little while after school before heading to our favourite night warung to grab some dinner. Tonight, I'm having my usual Fu Yung Hai and Mi Goreng. Delicious, always very satisfied. Sandra and Jonah dropped by and hung with us for a bit. The girls decided to watch a movie, but the movie was in German so I didn't join them. I made my way to my room and continued blogging and caught up with some friends via Skype or Facebook chat.

Good night world.
XOXO
